Ya Hey

A new bookish TV show, Ottessa Moshfegh, and a ton of Vampire Weekend!

News round-up for the week ending May 19, 2013:

“Bookworms, take note. RLTV, the cable network and online destination for adults 50 plus, premieres Bookmark, a weekly series that explores the culture surrounding books in America today, tonight at 10p. Hosted by author, columnist and former CNN anchor Daryn Kagan, the show include stories on how books have shaped people’s lives, explores quirky aspects of literary culture, and offers interviews with America’s top authors.” (via Cynopsis)

“My experience with people who get e-readers is after a very short while, they don’t come back to the bookstore. These same people are very used to getting their e-books from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, and breaking that purchasing track is all but impossible to do. As much as I loathe Amazon and what it’s done to the book industry, their website has become the gold standard by which all other book sites are judged. And, none of our sites really measure up.” –Josie Leavitt, from her post “Letting the E-Reader Go” (via Publisher’s Weekly Shelftalker blog)

This week I am name-checking and cultural-referencing Vampire Weekend jargon from their latest release Modern Vampires of the City. The Vampire Weekipedia: A Glossary of Terms and Saabs, Croesus, and Pre-Wars: A Glossary for the New Vampire Weekend Album, as analyzed and defined by Spin.com and New York Magazine’s Vulture blog, respectively. Jeah, I love Vampire Weekend.

This week’s short story from Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading series is a really good one. Here is Bettering Myself by Ottessa Moshfegh, brought to us by The Paris Review.
